Blood Collection

To maximize platelet volume and potency it is essential to utilize the PomPac® tube cooling system and the PomCol® blood draw cooling system. Store both the PomPac® and PomCol® in the refrigerator until the time of surgery.

1. Remove at least four tubes from their packages and place them in the PomPac®. A maximum of 6 tubes can be drawn without needing to flush the line with saline.

2. Begin a blood draw with a 21-gauge blood collection butterfly. Once the needle is inserted, wrap the patient’s arm with the PomCol®.

3. While keeping the resting tubes in the PomPac®, individually remove one tube and begin to fill it. Once the tube is filled place it back in the PomPac®. It is essential that the blood draw happens quickly to prevent fibrin loss.

4. Once all the tubes are filled, they can then be placed into the DuoQuattro® centrifuge. Tubes must be placed parallel to each other to eliminate harmful vibrations.™

Dr. Choukroun Butterfly Blood Collection Set

Designed to be the most reliable blood collection set when working with the Choukroun PRF system, this package includes 24 butterfly blood collection needles that are packaged sterile and ready for immediate use.

The Advantages of a Butterfly Needle for Blood Draw

In the dental office, speed and efficiency are important. The butterfly needle design used for this blood collection set allows clinicians to safely collect blood for PRF processing, with the highest success rate and the lowest amount of trauma for the patient.

Butterfly needles are sometimes referred to as scalp vein sets or winged infusion sets. All of these terms refer to the same type of system where plastic wings are wrapped on either side of a hollow needle used for vein puncture.

Originally, butterfly needles like those used in this blood collection set were designed for older patients, infants, children, and patients with difficult-to-access veins. Over time it has become recognized that butterfly needles are more convenient for clinicians and produce less trauma and bruising. In the dental office, this means better comfort for the patient, ease of procedure for the clinician, and efficient blood drawing to move on to the processing of PRF and then the use of the PRF for its wound healing properties.

Typical butterfly needles have a lure system where a syringe can be placed for blood collection. The needles in this blood collection set are attached to a tube and a specialized connection system that can interface directly with Choukroun PRF tubes, so there’s no additional equipment needed to safely draw blood from a patient. Made to the highest standards, this blood collection set is easy to work with and can enhance the chairside workflow without compromising safety.

A Blood Collection Set Designed Specifically for PRF

Using a butterfly needle keeps blood in excellent condition, especially when compared to drawing blood with an IV catheter. The rate of breakdown is almost halved when using a butterfly needle. This is especially important as it prevents the fibrin from degrading before processing.

There are some downsides to butterfly needles, but these aren’t relevant to the environment of a dental clinic. Butterfly needles perform poorly for the administration of IV medication, which is of no concern when drawing blood for processing in a PRF centrifuge.

Minimized Patient Side Effects

The butterfly needle system in our blood collection set minimizes side effects, although patients may still experience some minor effects without complication.

The most common include bleeding after the removal of the needle. This is usually addressed with an adhesive bandage. Even if bleeding isn’t present at the time of needle removal, it’s good practice to place an adhesive bandage as a precaution.

Patients may develop some bruising after leaving the clinic, and there can be some general soreness and tenderness around the area from the needle stick. This is normal, typically mild, and will fade within 24 hours.

Patients can experience lightheadedness after a blood draw, although this is rare in the context of a blood collection set for PRF. Clinicians can recommend that patients snack on energy-boosting foods, especially foods rich in iron, which can help to restore blood supply.

For the best results and easiest access, clinicians often choose to perform the blood draw at the antecubital area of the arm, where the veins are most visible and relatively shallow.
